I arrived at Prof. Self’s study a few minutes early today, when I came across a string of vials, each neatly labelled with the name of a writer: DBC Pierre, Beryl Bainbridge, F. Scott Fitzgerald. I mocked Prof. Self on the facile absurdity of attempting to reduce the quiddity of an author to a vial of urine. Self’s bulbous eyes gleamed and he advised me that it was not urine. I sensed that he wanted me to question him further, so I deliberately changed the subject in order to disappoint him. He retaliated by casually making reference to a piece in the Independent where Andrew Marr had claimed, ‘Will Self has got a lot going for him but won’t do anything interesting until he has fought his way out of the Amis influence’, but he failed to provoke me – I explained that I have the utmost respect for Martin, a fellow sesquipedalian, despite his recent decline into right-wing theatrics.
